For almost all the major sports in the world these days, the most coveted title is the ‘World Cup’ or ‘Championship’. Football, Hockey, Cricket, Rugby and Athletics are some of the many sporting events that have a regular event to decide who takes the title of ‘World Champion’. Countries and teams plan for years to come up with the winning teams and strategy for these events. For the last 20 years the World Cup has been the major event in the cricketing world. All the test playing countries and qualifying associate member countries come together and put their skills and expertise to test. The winner at the end of this event takes the title: ‘The World Champion’.
When One-day internationals became a part of cricket in 1971, it was very quickly realized by the governing bodies of cricket that this would be the game for future. The amazing response of spectators towards this format of the game made it an instant success. To take advantage of this and revive spectator interest in the game, a tournament was held in 1975 in England, which was the ICC Cricket World Cup. All the Test playing countries (8 at that time) were divided into two groups and the event began.
